Verifying a provably fair dice roll myself at a bitcoin casino
I played dice at bitcoin casinos for about a year before I checked a single result. The "provably fair" badge sat in the corner of every game, and I assumed it meant something without knowing what. One quiet evening I decided to find out by verifying a few of my own rolls from start to finish.
The idea is fairly simple once you see it in practice. Before you play, the casino gives you a hashed version of its server seed. You also have a client seed, which you can usually change to anything you like, and a counter called a nonce that goes up by one with every bet. The result of each roll comes from combining those three values. Because the casino commits to its seed in advance through the hash, it cannot change the seed after seeing your bets.
Here is what I actually did.
I changed my client seed to a random phrase I typed myself. Then I played about thirty small rolls and wrote down the nonce and result of a few of them.
Next I rotated the server seed in the fairness settings. That step matters: the casino only reveals the old unhashed seed once you rotate to a new one. I copied the revealed seed and checked that its hash matched the one shown to me before I started playing. It did.
Finally I pasted the server seed, my client seed and the nonce into an independent verifier. Several are published as open-source code, and I used one I could run in my browser without logging in. The rolls it produced matched the ones in my bet history.
It took about twenty minutes the first time. Now it takes five.
A few things I took away from this. Provably fair proves that a specific result came from the seeds. It says nothing about the house edge, which is still built into the payout table, so the long-run maths stays the same. It also does not cover games from outside studios such as most slots and live tables, which run on their own systems and are tested in other ways.
Still, I like knowing I can check. Casinos that make verification easy, with a visible seed history and a clear explanation, earn a little more trust from me. Those that hide the settings three menus deep earn a little less.
When I compare bitcoin casinos I often start with CasinoCryptoRank, then open each shortlisted site's fairness page before depositing. If I cannot find the seed settings within a minute, I move on.
